Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
·         Sam Gaviglio, RHP, selected from AAA Tacoma.
·         Hisashi Iwakuma, RHP, placed on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to 5/7) with inflammation in right shoulder.
·         Evan Marshall, RHP, transferred to the 60-day disabled (strained right hamstring).
Gaviglio (#44) will be in uniform and available for today's game (10:05 am PT) at the Philadelphia Phillies.
Gaviglio (pronounced "Guh-VEE-leo") will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.
Gaviglio, 26 (turns 27 on May 22), is 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA (12 ER, 32.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 starts with AAA Tacoma this season. Of his 5 starts with the Rainiers, 3 have been quality starts, including his last outing on May 4 at Las Vegas where he allowed 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 5 and not walking a batter in 7.2 innings pitched. His outing at Las Vegas also marked his 2nd consecutive win. Among Pacific Coast League pitchers with 3-or-fewer walks, his 32.2 innings pitched are 2nd-most in the league. He tossed a 7.0-inning complete game in his 2017 debut, April 13 vs. El Paso, taking the loss despite allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 7. Gaviglio made 1 start with Team Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, taking a no-decision after allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2 on March 11 vs. Team Venezuela.
Gaviglio was acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly on Nov. 20, 2014. The native of Ashland, Ore., has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons in the Cardinals (2011-14) and Mariners (2015-17) organizations, compiling a 36-39 record with a 4.01 ERA (278 ER, 624.1 IP) with 501 strikeouts and 164 walks. He was selected by Tampa Bay in the 40th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. After playing 3 seasons at Oregon State University, Gaviglio was selected by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2011 Draft.
Iwakuma, 36, is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA (15 ER, 31.0 IP) with 16 strikeouts and 12 walks in 6 starts with the Mariners this season. He posted back-to-back quality starts to begin the season, but since has gone 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA (12 ER, 19.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts and 6 walks over his last 4 starts (4/16-c). During that span, Iwakuma has pitched into the 6th inning twice (4/21 at OAK & 4/27 at DET) while also logging outings of 3.0 innings (4/16 vs. TEX) and 5.0 innings (5/3 vs. LAA). Last season, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-hander went 16-12 with a 4.12 ERA (91 ER, 199.0 IP) with 147 strikeouts and 46 walks in 33 starts with Seattle. His 16 wins were a career-high, and he led the club in wins (16), starts (33), innings pitched (199.0) and strikeouts (147).
The native of Tokyo, Japan, has spent his entire 6-year Major League career with the Mariners, compiling a career record of 63-69 with 2 saves and a 3.42 ERA (336 ER, 883.2 IP) with 714 strikeouts and 185 walks in 150 career appearances, including 136 starts. He originally signed with Seattle as a free agent on Jan. 5, 2012 after spending 11 seasons in the Japan Pacific League. Iwakuma went 107-69 with a 3.25 ERA (557 ER, 1541.0 IP) with 1175 strikeouts and 342 walks in 226 games (225 starts) during his career in the Japan Pacific League. In 2008, he was named Pacific League MVP and earned the Eiji Sawamura Award (Cy Young Award equivalent) after going 21-4 with a 1.87 ERA (42 ER, 201.2 IP) in 28 starts. He earned a bronze medal with the Japanese National Team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as a gold medal with Team Japan at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Marshall, 27, was originally placed on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday (5/6). He made two pitches in the 11th inning last Friday (5/5) before being removed from the game with a right hamstring strain. In 6 relief appearances over 2 stints with the Mariners (4/12-25 & 5/5-6), Marshall posted a 9.39 ERA (8 ER, 7.2 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 5 walks. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-hander was claimed off waivers from Arizona on April 4. He made appearance with AAA Tacoma before being recalled to Seattle on April 12. Overall, Marshall earned 1 save and did not allow a run in 4 outings (4.1 IP) with 6 strikeouts and 0 walks. The native of Sunnyvale, Calif., was originally selected by Arizona in the 4th round of the 2001 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Kansas State University. He earned the win in his Major League debut on May 6, 2014 at Milwaukee with Arizona. In parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Diamondbacks (2014-16) and Mariners (2017), he has compiled a career record of 4-7 with a 4.94 ERA (47 ER, 85.2 IP) with 74 strikeouts and 35 walks in 91 games.
