The Colorado Rockies are proud to announce a renewed partnership with Greenwood Village-based Newmont Mining Corporation. For the second consecutive season, Newmont - one of the world's leading gold producers - will donate $50 to Project C.U.R.E. for every strikeout thrown by a Rockies pitcher. Project C.U.R.E., based out of Centennial, Colo. is an organization that distributes donated medical supplies and equipment to more than 100 developing nations around the world.
During the 2016 season, Newmont generously donated more than $60,000 to Project C.U.R.E. as a result of the 1,223 strikeouts recorded by Colorado Rockies pitchers. This funding helped people in countries around the world receive much needed medical supplies and equipment.
"Newmont is proud to partner with the Rockies and Project C.U.R.E. to translate great performance on the field to better health care around the world," said Newmont President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Goldberg. "As a season ticket holder, I noticed that the Rockies did not have a K board at Coors Field to tally strikeouts. I thought Newmont could fill that gap, and also use the opportunity to raise awareness about our partners at Project C.U.R.E., spotlight volunteers from all three organizations, and raise funds to help out people who need it the most."
Said Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray: "It's a good feeling, knowing that we can help out Project C.U.R.E by going out and doing our job as pitchers. It's nice to have a positive impact on top of winning baseball games."
In 2016, Gray set a Colorado franchise record for the most strikeouts by a Rockies rookie in a single season with 185. On September 17 against the San Diego Padres, he set a new Rockies and Coors Field record for strikeouts in a single game with 16.
