The Chicago White Sox have claimed infielder Alen Hanson off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hanson, 24, spent the entire 2017 season with Pittsburgh, hitting .193 (11-57) with two triples and eight runs scored in 37 games before being designated for assignment on June 2. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Hanson made nine starts at second base this season while also appearing in two games at shortstop, two in right field and one at third base.
Hanson, a native of La Romana, Dominican Republic, has appeared in 64 career games over two seasons with the Pirates (2016-17), batting .205 (18-88) with 13 runs scored.
He is a .281 (797-2,834) hitter with 136 doubles, 71 triples, 53 home runs, 316 RBI, 442 runs scored and 205 stolen bases in 719 games over seven minor-league seasons (2010-16) after signing with the Pirates as a free agent on July 14, 2009. Hanson recorded 10-plus triples each season from 2012-15 and was named by MLB.com as a Top 100 Prospect in baseball prior to each of the 2013-15 seasons.
