SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves.
• Andrew Moore, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
• Dan Altavilla, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Moore (#48) will be the Mariners starting pitcher for tonight's (7:10 p.m. PT) game vs. the Kansas City Royals at Safeco Field.
Moore, 23, is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (3 ER, 7.0 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 0 walks in 1 start with the Mariners this season. The 6-foot, 195-pound right-hander made his Major League debut on June 22 vs. Detroit. He earned the win after limiting the Tigers to 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 without walking a batter over 7.0 innings of work. He became the 13th starting pitcher in club history to earn the win in his Major League debut, the first to do so since rotation-mate James Paxton (9/7/13 vs. TB). Moore was optioned to AAA Tacoma on June 23, where he made 1 start, taking a no decision on June 27 vs. Las Vegas after allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4 over 5.0 innings pitched. Overall with the Rainiers this season, he is 3-1 with a 3.06 ERA (18 ER, 53.0 IP) with 48 strikeouts and 8 walks in 9 starts. He began the season with AA Arkansas where he was 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA (8 ER, 34.2 IP) with 33 strikeouts and 9 walks in 6 games (5 starts) before being promoted to Tacoma on May 8. In his 14 minor league starts this season, he has limited opponents to 2 runs-or-fewer in 10 games, and 3 runs-or-fewer in 12-of-14 starts. After his 2016 season, he received the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award by the Seattle Mariners after going 12-4 with a 2.65 ERA (48 ER, 163.0 IP) in 29 starts between High-A Bakersfield and A Jackson.
In 3 minor league seasons in the Seattle organization (2015-17), he is 17-8 with a 2.58 ERA (83 ER, 289.2 IP) with 257 strikeouts and 50 walks in 57 games (50 starts). He has posted a 5.22 strikeout-to-walk ratio (257 K, 50 BB) in his minor league career. He was selected by Seattle in the 2nd round (72nd overall) of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University. During his collegiate career, he was 27-9 with a 2.10 ERA (81 ER, 347.2 IP) with 251 strikeouts in 51 games, including 48 starts. Moore is a Northwest native from Eugene, OR (North Eugene High School). He was named the Oregon High School Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore and junior, and a 5A State Player of the Year as a senior.
Altavilla, 24, is 1-1 with a 5.46 ERA (18 ER, 29.2 IP) with 36 strikeouts and 14 walks in 29 relief appearances over 2 stints (4/3-21 & 5/6-7/3) with the Mariners this season. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound right-hander has held opponents scoreless in 19-of-his-29 outings. He has allowed 20 runs (18 earned runs) over 11.0 innings of work in the other 10 games, including 5 outings of at least 2 runs allowed and 3 outings of 3-or-more runs allowed. Over his last 4 appearances (6/24-c), he has not given up a run, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 3 in 3.2 innings pitched. Since being recalled from AAA Tacoma on May 6, he posted a 4.84 ERA (12 ER, 22.1 IP) with 26 strikeouts and 8 walks in 20 games. He made 4 appearances with the Rainiers, posting a 3.18 ERA (2 ER, 5.2 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. In his first stint with Seattle (through April 21), he was 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA (6 ER, 7.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and 6 walks in 9 relief appearances. He earned his first career Major League win on April 6 at Houston, striking out 3 while giving up 1 hit in 1.0 scoreless inning of work.
The native of McKeesport, PA, made his Major League debut with Seattle last season on Aug. 27 at Chicago - AL. He did not allow a run in 15 games (12.1 IP) with the Mariners while striking out 10 and walking 1. In parts of 4 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he is 18-18 with 16 saves and a 3.68 ERA (113 ER, 276.2 IP) with 272 strikeouts and 109 walks. He was originally drafted by Seattle in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Mercyhurst (PA) College.
