Earlier today, the 2017 All-Star Game managers, Joe Maddon of the National League and Brad Mills of the American League, announced their starting lineups for Baseball's 88th Midsummer Classic, to be played on Tuesday at Marlins Park in Miami. The lineups were announced at this afternoon's 2017 All-Star Game Press Conference, which was carried live by MLB Network. Maddon's NL lineup will be:

Maddon has chosen Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer as the NL's starting pitcher. This marks the second career Midsummer Classic start for Scherzer, a five-time All-Star in his 10-year Major League career. As a member of the Detroit Tigers, Scherzer started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York for the AL, tossing 1.0 inning with a strikeout. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will become the fifth pitcher to make a Midsummer Classic start in each league, joining Vida Blue (AL - 1971, 1975; NL - 1978); Roger Clemens (AL - 1986, 2001; NL - 2004); Roy Halladay (AL - 2009; NL - 2011); and Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (AL - 1995, 1997; NL - 2000, 2001). In 18 starts on the season, the St. Louis native is 10-5 with a 2.10 ERA (128.1 IP, 73 H, 27 BB, 173 SO). The 32-year-old leads the Majors in ERA, while his 173 strikeouts are best in the NL. Over a six-start span from May 26th-June 21st, Scherzer fanned at least 10 batters in each start, marking the longest streak in the NL this season, the longest streak in Nationals history (since 2005) and tied for the longest streak in franchise history (Pedro Martinez, 1997). Scherzer's 59 career games of at least 10 strikeouts are the 11th-most in MLB history (since 1913) and the most among active pitchers.

Mills has selected left-hander Chris Sale of the Boston Red Sox as the AL's starting pitcher. This marks the second All-Star start for Sale, a six-time All-Star in his eight-year Major League career. The Florida native started the 2016 Midsummer Classic in San Diego as a member of the Chicago White Sox, tossing 1.0 inning and allowing one hit and one run with one strikeout. The 28-year-old will become the 16th different pitcher to make consecutive All-Star starts, the first since Johnson (2000-01) and the first in the AL since Dave Stieb (1983-84). In addition, Sale will become the first pitcher in All-Star history to make consecutive starts for different teams. In his first year as a member of the Red Sox, Sale is 11-4 with a 2.75 ERA (127.2 IP, 93 H, 22 BB, 178 SO). His 178 strikeouts pace the Majors, while his 127.2 innings pitched are an AL-high. The 178 strikeouts are the most by a pitcher at the All-Star break since Curt Schilling had 186 over his first 19 starts in 2002. The only other Red Sox pitcher to lead the Majors in strikeouts at the All-Star break was Clemens, doing so in 1988 (186) and in 1991 (123). This marks the first Midsummer Classic since 2001 (Johnson vs. Clemens) in which each pitcher had previously started an All-Star Game.
