The New York Mets announced today that catcher René Rivera was awarded to the Chicago Cubs on a waiver claim. The Mets recalled catcher Kevin Plawecki from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. In order to replace outfielder Curtis Granderson on the 25-man roster, the Mets recalled LHP Tommy Milone from his rehabilitation assignment and activated him from the Disabled List. Milone had been on the DL since May 24 with a sprained left knee.
Plawecki will wear #26 and Milone will wear #29 and both will be available for tonight's game vs. Miami.
Plawecki, 26, was with the Mets earlier this year from April 19-May 25 He hit .125 (3-24) with four RBI in 10 games with New York. He batted .328 (81-247) with 17 doubles, nine home runs and 45 RBI in 64 games for Las Vegas this season. Plawecki has hit .206 (80-389) with four home runs and 36 RBI in 131 career games with the Mets from 2015-2017.
Milone, 30, made five rehabilitation starts between rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League. He went 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA (13 earned runs/21.2 innings). He allowed 28 hits, issued three walks and struck out 14.
He was 1-2 with a 7.91 ERA (29 earned runs/33.0 innings) in nine games, six starts in the majors this year between the Mets and Minnesota Twins. Milone was 0-2 with a 10.50 ERA (14 earned runs/12.0 innings) in three starts with the Mets. He allowed 19 hits, issued seven walks and struck out 12.
Milone is 45-35 with two saves a 4.32 ERA (346 earned runs/721.1 innings) in 138 major league games, 124 starts with Washington, Oakland, Minnesota, Milwaukee and the Mets.
Rivera hit .230 (40-174) with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 54 games for New York this year.
