D-backs place Jeff Mathis on 10-day disabled list

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed C Jeff Mathis (@JMathSix) on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured right hand, recalled RHP Jake Barrett (@BJBace99) from Triple-A Reno, reinstated OF Reymond Fuentes (@RFuentes2115) from the 10-day disabled list (left thumb contusion), and optioned RHP Jimmie Sherfy to Reno.

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed C Jeff Mathis (@JMathSix) on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured right hand, recalled RHP Jake Barrett (@BJBace99) from Triple-A Reno, reinstated OF Reymond Fuentes (@RFuentes2115) from the 10-day disabled list (left thumb contusion), and optioned RHP Jimmie Sherfy to Reno.
Mathis, 34, suffered the injury last night in the fourth inning when the Mets' Dominic Smith fouled a ball off Mathis' right hand during his plate appearance to lead off the inning. Mathis remained in the game until being removed to start the bottom of the sixth inning. He has caught a team-high 56 games (55 starts) with 35.7 caught stealing percentage (10 caught stealing in 28 attempts), which is tied for fourth in the Majors (min. 50 games), and a 3.55 catchers ERA, which is sixth in the Majors (min. 200.0 innings). He reached base safely in a career-best 17 consecutive games (hit safely in 16 games) from June 22-August 5, hitting .333 (20-for-60)/.420 OBP with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 4 RBI and 9 walks. That stretch included an 11-game hitting streak from July 7-August 5, during which he hit .341 (14-for-41)/.438 OBP with 4 doubles, 2 RBI and 7 walks. In 58 games overall this season, he is hitting .213 (39-for-183)/.276 OBP with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 11 RBI and 14 walks.
Barrett, 26, joins the D-backs for his second stint this season. He has held opponents scoreless in 13 of 16 relief appearances, including all 8 road outings (7.0 IP, 5 H, 4 BB, 9 K). He has held lefties to a .185 average (5-for-27) with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts. He is holding first batters faced to a .071 average (1-for-14) with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. With runners in scoring position, he has held opponents to a .211 average (4-for-19) with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Overall, in his 16 outings, he is 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA (8 R-7 ER in 15.2 IP), .250 opponent average (16-for-64), .324 opponent on-base percentage, and 18 strikeouts (10.34 strikeouts-per-9.0-innings ratio).
Fuentes, 26, returns after being sidelined with a left thumb contusion suffered on July 18 in his final plate appearance vs. Reds. In 11 rehab games at Reno, he hit .238 (10-for-42)/.333 OBP with 3 doubles, 1 RBI and 4 walks. Over an 18-game stretch with the D-backs from June 4-28, he reached base via hit or walk in 14 games, hitting .395 (17-for-43)/.435 OBP with 1 double, 1 triple, 1 homer, 2 RBI and 3 walks. In his last 12 games (since June 8) entering as a sub, he is hitting .455 (5-for-11)/.455 OBP with 2 homers and 4 RBI. As a starter, he has reached base via hit or walk in 18 of 23 starts, hitting .229 (19-for-83)/.273 OBP with 1 double, 2 triples, 2 RBI and 5 walks. Overall, in 41 games, he is hitting .240 (24-for-100) with 1 double, 2 triples, 2 homers, 6 RBI, 5 walks and 2 stolen bases.
Sherfy, 25, made his Major League debut on August 20 with 1.0 perfect inning (2 strikeouts) @ Twins then last night earned his first win with another perfect inning (1 strikeout). In 41 games with Reno in 2017, he was 2-1 with 17 saves, a 3.33 ERA (17 ER in 46.0 IP) and 58 strikeouts (11.3 SO per 9.0 IP). The 2017 Pacific Coast League midseason All-Star also limited right-handers to a .130 average (12-for-92) this season, and was named the organization's Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Month for June after 9 scoreless outings (10.2 IP).
