HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have claimed outfielder Cameron Maybin off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Maybin will join the club in time for the doubleheader on Saturday in Houston. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Maybin, 30, has played in 93 games for the Angels this season, hitting .235 (79x336) with 19 doubles and 29 stolen bases. Entering today, he owned a share for the American League lead in steals, tied with the Astros Jose Altuve. Maybin has made 88 starts for the Angels this season, including 44 in left field, 40 in center field and four in right field.
A veteran of 11 Major League seasons, Maybin owns a lifetime .256 (785x3065) average with 160 stolen bases in 889 career games with Detroit (2007), Florida (2008-10), San Diego (2011-14), Atlanta (2015), Detroit (2016) and Los Angeles (2017). He had his best Major League season with the Tigers last year, hitting .315 (110x349) with an .801 OPS in 94 games.
To make room for Maybin on the 40-man roster, the Astros have designated right-handed pitcher Dayan Diaz for assignment. With the addition of Maybin and the removal of Diaz, the Astros 40-man roster remains full.
