To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary season, the Oakland A's have announced an art project that will bring mascot Stomper to life, while also encouraging fans to explore Oakland.
As part of the "Stomper in the Town" project, 50 six-foot Stomper statues will be created into unique works of art and placed around the community to be on display throughout the 2018 season. It is expected that the statues will be sponsored by local companies and organizations, with proceeds benefitting the Oakland A's Community Fund.
To kick start the project, the A's are now seeking local and regional artists to transform the Stomper statues into varied forms of artwork. Oakland artists are particularly encouraged to participate.
"This unique experience will put Stomper's playful personality on display and will highlight the creativity of local artists," said Catherine Aker, vice president of Communications and Community Relations for the A's. "We are excited to create an opportunity for memories as our fans explore Oakland in search of all 50 Stomper statues."
The project will create a visible and fun season-long visitor attraction around the Oakland community, while also serving as an eventual fundraiser. Following the conclusion of the public art display, the Stomper statues will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Oakland A's Community Fund.
