The Phillies have claimed left-handed pitcher Zac Curtis off waivers from the Seattle Mariners, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
The 25-year-old has appeared in three games during two separate stints with the Mariners this season, tossing 4.2 innings with no earned runs allowed and two strikeouts. He appeared in 41 games for double-A Arkansas, where he posted a 3.51 ERA, earned 13 saves and struck out 60 batters in 51.1 innings. He led the league in games finished (37) and ranked fourth in saves.
Curtis tossed 13.1 innings over 21 games in 2016 with Arizona before being acquired by Seattle in a November 2016 trade. He was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the sixth round of the June 2014 draft. In four minor league seasons, he is 8-8 with 66 saves, a 2.44 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 229 strikeouts in 162.1 innings of work, all in relief. Curtis will wear #52.
To make room for Curtis on the 40-man roster, right-hander Jesen Therrien was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.
