Mariners announce changes to 2018 Major League coaching staff

Seattle Mariners Manager Scott Servais today announced that Major League coaches Manny Acta, Edgar Martinez, Mel Stottlemyre, Scott Brosius and Chris Prieto will return to the Major League coaching staff in 2018, while Nasusel Cabrera will remain with the big league club in a to-be-determined position.

Seattle Mariners Manager Scott Servais today announced that Major League coaches Manny Acta, Edgar Martinez, Mel Stottlemyre, ScottBrosius and Chris Prieto will return to the Major League coaching staff in 2018, while Nasusel Cabrera will remain with the big league club in a to-be-determined position.
Tim Bogar (bench coach) and Casey Candaele (first base coach) will not return in 2018.
 
Manny Acta spent the past two seasons as the third base coach. In addition to his bench coach responsibilities, Manny will coach the infielders and be responsible for defensive positioning next season. The 2018 season will be his third with Seattle, and his 14th as a Big League coach or manager.
 
Scott Brosius was added to the Major League staff as assistant coach in 2017. In addition to his third base coach responsibilities, Scott will coach base running. Brosius spent the 2016 season, his first as a professional coach, as the hitting coach for AAA Tacoma. He spent previous eight seasons (2008-2015) as head coach at Linfield College (McMinnville, OR) where he had a 270-96 record and won a national title. The 2018 season will be his second as a Big League coach.
 
Edgar Martinez returns as Hitting Coach. The Mariners averaged 4.63 runs per game in 2017, and Seattle was sixth in the American League in on-base percentage at .325, just behind Boston (.329). Edgar originally joined the staff on June 20, 2015, making the 2018 season his fourth with Seattle.
 
Chris Prieto was the Special Projects Coach in 2017 after spending the previous three seasons as the Mariners Quality Assurance Coach. He was also responsible for replay last season. In addition to coaching first base, Prieto will coach Major League outfielders and assist Brosius with base running. The 2018 season will be his fifth with Seattle and his fifth as a Big League coach overall.
 
Mel Stottlemyre returns as Pitching Coach. The Mariners used a club-record 40 different pitchers in 2017 (tying a Major League record), including a Major League high 17 different starters. The 2018 season will be his third with Seattle, his fifth as a Big League pitching coach and his seventh as a Major League coach, overall.
 
Fleming Baez (bullpen catcher in 2017) and Nasusel Cabrera (batting practice pitcher / interim bullpen coach in 2017) will also return in 2018.
