Red Sox Foundation Executive Director Gena Borson today announced that she will be leaving her role with the team's foundation at the end of 2017.  
 
"The decision to leave the Red Sox was incredibly difficult, but after being away from home for more than a decade, it's time for me to move back and be closer to my family," said Red Sox Executive Director Gena Borson. "Working with the Red Sox Foundation to help provide meaningful support for those in need has been a true privilege. I am grateful to the foundation board for their leadership throughout my tenure, and thankful for the opportunity to help guide so many important community programs and initiatives." 
 
Borson, who has served as Executive Director of the Red Sox Foundation since January 2013, has worked for the charity since 2005. She began her work with the foundation as a volunteer and then as a consultant before becoming the Director of Special Events and Fundraising. Prior to joining the Red Sox Foundation, Borson worked at Wills and Associates based in Chicago, a special events company. 
 
"Gena has had an extraordinary impact on the philanthropic initiatives of the Red Sox Foundation," said Red Sox Foundation Chairman Tom Werner. "She rolled up her sleeves and put in countless hours to be at the service of others. We will miss her relentless work ethic, compassion, and dedication. The Red Sox Foundation has risen to new heights under her stewardship."   
 
The Red Sox will begin the search for a new Executive Director immediately, using the services of Korn Ferry's Nonprofit, Philanthropy, and Social Enterprises division.
 
The Red Sox Foundation was founded and initially funded by the Red Sox ownership group in 2002, and is active throughout New England and in Lee County, Florida, the club's Spring Training home. The foundation focuses its efforts on the areas of health, education, and youth sports. Since its creation, the foundation has donated to 1,620 organizations, including its own self-operated programs. It is the largest team charity in Major League Baseball, and one of the largest in professional sports.
 
The Red Sox Foundation operates out of Fenway Park with eight full time employees, the support of the Boston Red Sox, and thousands of volunteers.
