D-Backs Agree to Terms with Overbay

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with infielder Lyle Overbay on a one-year contract, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Overbay, 34, hit .286 (12-for-42) with 4 doubles, a home run and 10 RBI in 18 games along with a .388 on-base percentage and .452 slugging percentage after signing with the D-backs as a free agent on Aug. 13. He made his first career Postseason appearance in the National League Division Series versus the Milwaukee Brewers. In 121 combined games for the D-backs and Pittsburgh Pirates, he hit .234 (92-for-394) with 21 doubles, a triple, 9 home runs and 47 RBI.

Among active first basemen since 2001, he ranks fifth with 300 doubles, sixth with 1,136 hits, ninth with 541 walks and 10th with 1,843 total bases offensively while defensively ranking fourth with 885 assists, tied for fifth with a .995 fielding percentage and sixth with 1,199 games and 1,128 starts.

Over parts of 11 Major League seasons with the D-backs, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays and Pirates, he has batted .270 (1158-for-4283) with 308 doubles, 11 triples, 131 home runs and 571 RBI in 1,259 games with a .354 on-base percentage and .439 slugging percentage. He has eclipsed the 15-homer mark six times and the 30-doubles mark seven times. He owns a .995 career fielding percentage in 1,199 games at first base (1,128 starts).

Overbay was selected by the D-backs in the 18th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft and saw action with the D-backs during the 2001-03 seasons.
