Marlins aquire RHP Carlos Zambrano & cash from Cubs

Also sign INF Greg Dobbs to two-year contract

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano and cash from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad. In addition, the team has signed infielder Greg Dobbs to a two-year contract for 2012-13. The announcements were made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest.

Zambrano, 30, is a three-time All-Star and has compiled a career mark of 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA in 319 games, 282 starts, all with the Cubs from 2001-11. He threw a no-hitter on Sept. 14, 2008 vs. the Astros (in Milwaukee) and currently ranks eighth among active pitchers (min. 1500 IP) in ERA. In 2006, Zambrano tied for the NL lead with a career-best 16 wins. A top-five finisher in NL Cy Young balloting three times (2004, 2006, 2007), Zambrano is also a three-time (2006, 2008, 2009) Silver Slugger winner. He owns a career batting average of .241 with 23 home runs.

Zambrano was signed by the Cubs out of Venezuela in 1997. He ranks second on the Cubs all-time strikeout list with 1,542 career strikeouts and is 15th on the Cubs all-time wins list.

Dobbs, 33, hit .370 (10x27) as a pinch hitter in 2011, the second-highest pinch-hit average in the Majors last season. He finished 2011 as the active pinch-hit home run leader with nine and the active pinch-RBI leader with 60. Dobbs was second on the Marlins last year with 10 game-winning RBI. Signed by the Marlins as a free agent on January 26, 2011, Dobbs owns a career average of .264 with 39 home runs and 211 RBI in 689 games with Seattle (2004-06), Philadelphia (2007-10) and the Marlins.

Volstad, 25, has gone 32-39 with a 4.59 ERA in 103 games, 102 starts with the Marlins, making his ML debut in 2008. He was originally the Marlins first-round pick in the 2005 Draft.
