Marlins select two pitchers in MLB Phase of Rule 5 Draft

The Miami Marlins today selected right-handed pitchers Elieser Hernandez and Brett Graves in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. The Club also selected four players in the Triple-A phase of the Draft.

The Miami Marlins today selected right-handed pitchers Elieser Hernandez and Brett Graves in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. The Club also selected four players in the Triple-A phase of the Draft.
Hernandez, 22, was selected from the Houston Astros organization in the first round of the MLB phase. He is a native of Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela, and spent a majority of 2017 with Single-A Buies Creek in the Carolina League, where he went 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA (63.1 ip/28 er) in 15 appearances (11 starts), with 74 strikeouts. He made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Astros in 2012 and has gone 25-23 with a 3.32 ERA in 94 career appearances (65 starts). He was a two-time Midwest League Pitcher of the Week in 2016 for Quad Cities, where he went 4-3 with a 2.37 ERA in 11 appearances (9 starts).
Graves, 24, was selected in the second round of the MLB phase from the Oakland Athletics' organization. He is a native of St. Charles, Missouri, and was a third-round pick by the A's out of the University of Missouri in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. He combined to go 1-1 with a 4.47 ERA (56.1/28) in 14 appearances (10 starts) between Single-A Stockton and Double-A Midland in 2017. He was a mid-season All-Star for Single-A Beloit in 2015, when he went 12-8 with a 5.36 ERA (142.2/85) in 28 starts, including a 6-2 mark in the first half.
With the addition of Hernandez and Graves, Miami's 40-man roster is now full.
Also today, Miami selected catcher B.J. Lopez (from Arizona), catcher Sharif Othman (Yankees), first baseman Will Allen III (Detroit), and right-handed pitcher Brandon Barker (Baltimore), respectively, in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft.
