The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed infielder José Reyes to a one-year contract. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated LHP Josh Smoker for assignment.
Reyes, 34, is the franchise leader in stolen bases (403) and triples (110), ranks second in hits (1,491), runs (855) doubles (260) and is ninth in RBI (505) and batting average (.286).
"I'm glad to be back," said Reyes, a four-time All-Star (2006-2007, 2010-2011). "This is my home. I'm excited to be back with a great group of teammates. I will do everything I can to help us get back to the postseason."
Reyes is the fifth player in team history to have at least 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases, joining Darryl Strawberry, Howard Johnson, Carlos Beltrán and David Wright. He collected his 2,000^th career hit last year on May 20 vs. the Angels.
The 6-0, 195-pounder hit .246 (123-501) with 25 doubles, seven triples, 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 145 games last season. He batted .288 (61-212) with a .356 on-base percentage in the second half.
Reyes leads all active players with 512 stolen bases, including 24 last year, which ranked fifth in the NL. He is also one of only nine players in major league history with 100 or more triples, 100 or more home runs and 500 or more stolen bases.
He has hit 21 leadoff home runs with the Mets, tied for the most in team history with Curtis Granderson.
Reyes has hit .286 (2,095-7,324) with 375 doubles, 128 triples, 141 home runs, 703 RBI with a .767 OPS during his 15-year career with the Mets, Marlins, Blue Jays and Rockies.
