The Pittsburgh Pirates unveiled today their new Thursday home alternate jerseys and caps for the 2018 season to be worn as part of the team's Military Appreciation Program.
The updated jersey is a specially designed Majestic Athletic button-down white home jersey with green numbers and lettering complete with the military five-star patch on the right sleeve and a camouflage designed jolly roger logo patch on the left sleeve. The New Era cap is solid green with a camouflage designed bill and black Pirates "P."
The new uniform combination will be worn every Thursday Pirates home game as part of the Pirates Military Appreciation Program, designed to honor military service men and women at PNC Park. Each Thursday representatives from a designated military organization are honored in a pregame on-field ceremony and hosted in the Pirates Charities Suite. In addition, on these dates all proceeds from the Pirates Charities 50/50 Raffle supports that specific military organization.
"The Military Appreciation Program is extremely important to our Club and our players as we have been afforded a unique opportunity to give back to so many deserving organizations that are supporting our active service members and veterans," said Pirates President Frank Coonelly. "Pirates Charities is committed to supporting even more military organizations moving forward to ensure that the men and women of western Pennsylvania who are serving or who have served are receiving the resources and support that they need."
Since the Club introduced the Thursday Military Appreciation Program in 2015, the Pirates and Pirates Charities have supported a total of 14 different military organizations through the initiative, helping organizations such as It's About the Warrior Foundation, Operation Troop Appreciation, Veteran's Leadership Program and many more.
Since its inception in 2006, Pirates Charities has placed special emphasis on three core areas that are priorities to the organization. The philanthropic arm of the team focuses on supporting military members and their families, youth health, fitness and education programs, as well as offering support to those in the community who are fighting cancer.
