The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed infielder Neil Walker to a one-year Major League contract.
Walker, 32, hit .265/.362/.439 (102-for-385) with 59R, 21 doubles, 2 triples, 14 home runs, 49 RBIs and 55 walks in 111 games between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers in 2017. The switch-hitter made 90 starts at second base, eight at first base and four at third base.
During his nine-year Major League career, Walker has batted .272/.341/.437 (1,051-for-3,860) with 521 runs, 204 doubles, 130 home runs and 522 RBIs in 1,060 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2009-15), the Mets (2016-17) and the Brewers (2017). The Pittsburgh native joins now-teammate Giancarlo Stanton as two of the five hitters to reach double digits in home runs in the National League in each of the last eight seasons (2010-17). He won the NL Silver Slugger Award at second base in 2014, setting a career high with 23 home runs.
Walker was originally drafted by the Pirates in the first round (11th overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.
To make room for Walker on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated outfielder Jake Cave for assignment.
