LHP Sergio Escalona to Undergo Elbow Surgery

Tommy John Procedure To Be Scheduled For Next Week In Houston

KISSIMMEE, FL — Astros left-handed pitcher Sergio Escalona will undergo surgery on his left elbow to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today.

An MRI taken on Escalona’s elbow yesterday at Florida Hospital revealed the tear. Escalona will undergo Tommy John surgery next week in Houston.

Escalona, 27, made two relief appearances in Spring Training, allowing four earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. His last appearance was on Thursday vs. the Mets in Port St. Lucie. In 49 relief appearances for the Astros in 2011, he was 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA (9ER/27.2IP). In 63 career Major League appearances, all in relief, he is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA (16ER/41.1IP).
