Prior to tonight's game against the New York Yankees, outfielder/infielder Brock Holt was returned from his injury rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 10-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Tzu-Wei Lin to Triple-A Pawtucket.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Holt, 29, hit .340 (17-for-50) with a .400 on-base percentage, six doubles, one home run, and seven RBI over 16 games with the Red Sox before being placed on the disabled list on April 27 with a left hamstring strain. He started one rehabilitation game with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, playing six innings at shortstop and going 1-for-3 at the plate. The left-handed hitter has hit safely in each of his last nine major league games, batting .471 (16-for-34), and has reached base in all 14 starts this season. A seven-year major league veteran, the 2015 All-Star has played 459 career games with the Pirates (2012) and Red Sox (2013-18), batting .267 (403-for-1,507) with 212 runs scored, 82 doubles, 12 triples, 14 home runs, and 136 RBI.
Lin, 24, has played 14 games for the Red Sox this season, making seven starts at shortstop and two at second base and posting a .188 average (6-for-32) with three runs scored, two doubles, and four walks. Lin began the season with two games for Triple-A Pawtucket, reaching base in five of eight plate appearances before being recalled to Boston on April 10. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 21 prospect in the Red Sox organization, he has spent his entire professional career in the Red Sox system since signing as an international free agent in June 2012. In 39 major league games since his 2017 debut, the infielder has hit .239 (21-for-88) with two doubles, two triples, and 13 walks.
