SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Phil Hughes, cash and the 74th overall pick in the 2018 Draft (Competitive Balance Round B) from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for catcher Janigson Villalobos, Executive Vice President & General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

Hughes, 31, began the 2018 season on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain before making seven appearances (two starts) for Minnesota, posting a 6.75 ERA (9 ER, 12.0 IP) with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Hughes has gone 88-79 with a 4.49 ERA (634 ER, 1270.1 IP), 1,016 strikeouts and 308 walks in 274 appearances (211 starts) over parts of 12 Major League seasons with the Yankees (2007-13) and Twins (2014-18). A 2009 World Series champion with the Yankees, the 6-5, 240-pound right-hander earned his first-career All-Star selection in 2010. In 2014 with the Twins, Hughes set the MLB record for highest strikeout-to-walk ratio at 11.63 and became the sixth pitcher (seventh time) in baseball history to reach 200.0 innings pitched and walk less than 20 batters.
