The Miami Marlins completed the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft this evening, making their final 30 selections in Rounds 11-40. The Club selected 41 players over the course of the three-day Draft, and took position players with its first five picks for just the second time in franchise history (also, 1998). It was also just the seventh time that the team used at least four of its top five picks on position players (also, 2012, 2007, 2006, 2000, 1998, 1995).
Miami opened its 2018 Draft by selecting outfielder Connor Scott out of Plant High School in Tampa, Florida, with the 13th overall pick. The Club also selected shortstop Osiris Johnson out of Encinal High School (CA) with the 53rd overall pick, and catcher Will Banfield out of Brookwood High School (GA) with the 69th overall pick on the opening night of the Draft.
Scott, 18, is 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, and bats and throws left-handed. According to MaxPreps, he batted .424 (89x210) over 72 games during his three-year varsity career at Plant. He had 14 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs, and 58 RBI in that time. As a senior this spring, he batted .526 (30x57) in 20 games, with 20 runs scored, four doubles, two triples, five home runs, 19 RBI, and six steals. He drew 17 walks and struck out just four times in his final season, and helped lead Plant to the Region 2 Final in the FHSAA 8A Baseball Championship. He was rated by Baseball America as the third-best outfield prospect in the Draft.
Johnson, 17, is a native of Alameda, California and the second cousin of former National League MVP Jimmy Rollins. In his senior season at Encinal he batted .535 (46x86) with 30 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 24 RBI over 26 games. Banfield (Lawrenceville, Georgia), 18, was taken with the first pick in Competitive Balance Round B. He was the fourth-ranked catching prospect in the Draft by Baseball America.
Day 2 began with the selection of outfielder Tristan Pompey (Toronto, Ontario) out of the University of Kentucky. He is the younger brother of Toronto outfielder Dalton Pompey. Tristan, 21, is a switch hitter coming off a junior campaign in which he batted .335 (62x185) in 60 games, with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 39 RBI, and 10 stolen bases.
Miami opened Day 3 by selecting outfielder Davis Bradshaw (McLaurin, Mississippi) out of Meridian Community College in Round 11 (No. 327). The left-handed bat hit .442 in 52 games, with 64 runs, 49 RBI, 22 stolen bases and eight home runs as a freshman this year.
In total, the Marlins drafted 25 pitchers, seven outfielders, five infielders, and four catchers.
