Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by W.B. Mason for the period ending June 10th.
Goldschmidt posted a slash line of .640/.690/1.440 with 10 runs scored, 16 hits, six doubles, a triple, four home runs and 11 RBI over six games played to claim his second career NL Player of the Week Award, previously winning for the period ending May 3, 2015. Among his NL counterparts, Paul finished his strong week first in hits, extra-base hits (11), runs scored, RBI, total bases (36), batting average and slugging percentage; tied for first in doubles and home runs; second in on-base percentage; and tied for second in triples. This is Arizona's third weekly award this season, following Patrick Corbin (April 23rd) and A.J. Pollock (May 7th).
On Saturday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, the five-time All-Star went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a pair of home runs and four RBI to lead the Diamondbacks to a 12-7 victory. The multi-homer outing was his second in as many days, matching the Club record with back-to-back two-homer contests. In addition, the performance was his fourth consecutive game with at least three hits, establishing a new franchise record. The Texas State University product became the first National Leaguer to accomplish the feat since Starling Marte of the Pittsburgh Pirates from June 12-15, 2015. Over a torrid three-game stretch from Wednesday-Saturday, the 30-year-old veteran logged at least three hits and two RBI in each contest. "Goldy" became just the second player in D-backs history to do so, joining two-time All-Star Steve Finley (June 1-4, 1999). Goldschmidt, who notched a pair of hits in Sunday's contest against the Rockies, became the first D-backs hitter to record five consecutive multi-hit contests since his teammate David Peralta did so last season from April 21st-26th. Additionally, the three-time Gold Glove Award winner became the fifth player since 1908 to register at least two extra-base hits and two RBI in four consecutive games, joining Frank Howard (May 12-16, 1968), Hall of Famer Frank Robinson (September 19-22, 1966), Vic Wertz (July 28-August 1, 1950) and Chet Laabs (July 15-17).
First baseman José Martínez (.600, 6 R, 4 HR, 9 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals and All-Star shortstop Brandon Crawford (.611, 6 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI) of the San Francisco Giants also delivered strong weeks at the plate. Along with Goldschmidt, the trio finished their impressive weeks with a batting average of .600-or-better. Entering play today, the 29-year-old Martínez owns an eight-game hitting streak dating back to June 1st with five multi-hit efforts during that span. In addition, the Venezuelan native homered in three straight games from June 7th-9th, including a multi-homer effort on Friday. Other noteworthy performances last week included All-Star first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers; All-Star first baseman and current NL leading vote-getter Freddie Freeman (.385, 6 R, 3 2B, 3 HR) of the Atlanta Braves; and starting pitcher Zach Eflin (2-0, 1.98 ERA, 13.2 IP, 11 SO) of the Philadelphia Phillies.
