Brandon Phillips, Reds agree to new contract

All-Star Second Baseman to sign 6-year deal

Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the signing of All-Star 2B Brandon Phillips to a 6-year contract through the 2017 season. Phillips had been signed through this season as part of a 5-year deal he received in February 2008.

"Brandon has been an integral part of our organization, both on and off the field, as long as any player in our clubhouse," Jocketty said. "He has made himself one of the best all-around players in the game. We think we can build a contending team around the players we have here."

President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini said, "We're excited to be able to keep Brandon here for 5 more years. He is an important part of our team. His talents on the field, his efforts in the community and his interaction with our fans make him one of the more recognizable and valued members of our organization."

Phillips, 30, is a 2-time National League All-Star who in the last 4 seasons has won 3 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and a Louisville Silver Slugger Award. In 2011, he was 1 of only 6 players voted to the All-Star team who also won both Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards, and he was rated by field managers as the best defensive second baseman in the NL.

Last year, he hit .300 while winning his third Gold Glove and became the first Reds second baseman ever to win a Silver Slugger. He led all National League second basemen in hitting, on-base percentage, runs, hits and doubles while ranking second in RBI and slugging percentage. Among the all-time leaders among Reds second basemen, Phillips ranks second in HR and RBI, third in doubles and fourth in hits and stolen bases.
