Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced Friday that catcher Mike Marjama has informed the club that he is retiring.
Seattle's Major League, 40-man roster, is now at 37 players.
Marjama will be taking a new position with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA).
Marjama, 28, made his first Opening Day roster this season, including catching Felix Hernandez on Opening Night. In all, he appeared in 10 of the season's first 17 games, hitting .111 (3x27) with 3 doubles, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 20.
In 43 games with the Rainiers this season, Marjama hit .247 (39x158) with 22 runs, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 23 RBI. He has been on the disabled list since June 19 with a concussion.
Marjama was acquired by Seattle from Tampa Bay on Aug. 6, 2017. He made his MLB debut on Sept. 3, 2017 as a defensive replacement at catcher. He made his first MLB start on September 27, and was 2-for-4 with a double. He hit .167 (13x78) with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 21 games with AAA Tacoma after being acquired by Seattle and prior to his MLB recall. Mike started the season at AAA Durham, where he appeared in 72 games and hit .274 (72x263) with 16 doubles, 9 home runs and 51 RBI.
Marjama was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University.       In seven minor league seasons, he is a .275 hitter (490x1783) with 112 doubles, 12 triples, 37 home runs and 240 runs batted in.
