Padres place Kyle Blanks on 15-day DL, select RHP Joe Wieland from Triple-A

Wieland to start in his Major League debut tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed infielder/outfielder Kyle Blanks on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain and have selected right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland from Triple-A Tucson.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Blanks, 25, has played in four games, one start, so far this season, going 1-for-5 (.200) with a walk and two strikeouts.  The right-handed hitter made his third-career Opening Day roster this season, after starting last season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Wieland, 22, has made two starts for Triple-A Tucson this season, going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA (3 ER/7.2 IP) and 11 strikeouts against just two walks for the Padres.  The right-hander was acquired by San Diego from the Texas Rangers along with left-hander Robbie Erlin on July 31, 2011 in exchange for right-hander Mike Adams.  He was named the eighth-best prospect in the Padres organization by Baseball America heading into this season.

With today’s transactions, the Padres currently have a full 40-man roster.
