FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The New York Mets announced that the club acquired minor league infielder William Toffey, RHP Bobby Wahl and international bonus pool money from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for RHP Jeurys Familia.
"This trade hits three major areas," Mets Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager John Ricco said. We got a major league ready reliever our scouts recommended, a position player who was a high selection from the 2017 draft and strong prospect in the A's system as well as receiving international bonus pool money to help in the future."
Toffey, 23, was Oakland's fourth round pick in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft from Vanderbilt. The 6-2, 205-pounder was ranked by MLB.com as the Athletics 17th-best prospect. Toffey was hitting .244 (40-164) with eight doubles, five homers, 32 RBI with a .357 OBP in 48 games this year with Stockton (A) of the California League. He batted .263 (55-209) with 11 doubles, two triples, one homer, 22 RBI with a .377 OBP in 57 games with Vermont (A) of the New York-Penn League last year.
"I think very highly of Toffey," Mets Special Assistant J.P. Ricciardi said. "He's got great strike zone discipline, gap-to-gap power and is a solid defender."
Wahl, 26, appeared in seven games with Oakland last year, posting a 4.70 ERA (four earned runs/7.2 innings). He was the Athletics fifth-round pick in 2013 from Ole Miss. The 6-2, 210-pounder was 3-2 with a 2.27 ERA (10 earned runs/39.2 innings) in 34 games with Nashville (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League this season. He racked up 65 strikeouts in 39.2 innings and was tied for fifth in the PCL with 11 saves.
Wahl has 284 strikeouts in 216.1 career minor league innings.
"The Mets have been aggressive internationally the last two years," said Mets Special Assistant Omar Minaya. "This extra bonus pool money will be extremely helpful in acquiring potential top flight talent."
Familia, 28, was 4-4 with 17 saves and a 2.88 ERA (13 earned runs/40.2 innings) in 40 games with the Mets this year. He ranked third in team history with 123 saves.
"Jeurys has been a vital member of our organization ever since we signed him in 2007," said Ricco. "We wish him well in Oakland."
