Prior to tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox returned left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated him from the 10-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned infielder Tzu-Wei Lin to Pawtucket.

Pomeranz, 29, was placed on the disabled list on June 5 (retroactive to June 2) with left biceps tendinitis. He made four rehab starts for the PawSox, most recently throwing 6.0 innings on July 18 at Charlotte and allowing only one run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. The left-hander has made eight starts for Boston this season, going 1-3 with a 6.81 ERA (28 ER/37.0 IP). After earning his first All-Star selection in 2016, Pomeranz set career bests last season in starts (32), wins (17), and innings pitched (173.2) while posting a 3.32 ERA, as the Red Sox went 22-10 in his outings. Selected by Cleveland in the first round of the 2010 June Draft (fifth overall), Pomeranz was acquired by Boston from San Diego on July 14, 2016.
Lin, 24, has gone 8-for-44 (.182) with two doubles in 19 games over three stints with Boston this season. He has also hit .308 (57-for-185) with five home runs in 46 games for Pawtucket, including .350 (48-for-137) in his last 33 games. The left-handed batter has hit safely in 27 of his last 28 games with the PawSox, including each of his last 11. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 21 prospect in the Red Sox organization, Lin has spent his entire professional career in the Boston system since signing as an international free agent in June 2012. In 41 major league games since his 2017 debut, the Taiwanese native has hit .226 (21-for-93) while making 14 starts at shortstop, six at third base, and five at second base.
