The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher William Cuevas from Triple-A Pawtucket as the club's 26th man for today's day-night doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. Under Major League Baseball Rules, both teams are permitted to add an extra player for today's games.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Cuevas, 27, is 8-6 with a 3.45 ERA (45 ER/117.1 IP) in 20 starts with the PawSox this season, striking out 102 hitters and walking 32. He has made one major league appearance this season, allowing one run over the final 2.0 innings of an 11-4 Red Sox win on July 3 at Washington. Originally signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2008, Cuevas made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2016 before splitting the 2017 season between the Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers organizations. The Venezuelan native returned to the Red Sox organization in December 2017, signing as a minor league free agent.
