Lakewood third baseman Jake Scheiner, Lakewood left-hander Zach Warren and Gulf Coast League Phillies-West shortstop Luis García have been named Phillies Minor League Hitter, Pitcher and Defender of the Month, respectively, for August.
The 23-year-old Scheiner batted .347 (25-72) with six doubles, two triples, three home runs, 15 RBI, 12 walks, a .466 on-base percentage and 1.077 OPS in 21 games during August. He hit safely in each of his first 10 games in the month, and in 18 of his 21 total. Scheiner's .466 on-base percentage ranked fourth among all combined single-A players in August, and his 1.077 OPS ranked 10th. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound third baseman finished the season with the best on-base percentage (.372) in the South Atlantic League, ranked second in average (.296) and fourth in hits (134) and total bases (213). Scheiner was selected by the Phillies in the fourth round of the June 2017 draft.
Warren, a 22-year-old reliever, appeared in nine games in relief, striking out 24 batters, walking two and allowing just two runs (one earned) in 10.0 innings of work. He converted all five of his save opportunities, improving to 15 of 16 on the season. No other pitcher in the minor leagues had as many strikeouts in as few innings pitched in August, and Warren finished his season with exactly 100 strikeouts in 56.2 innings, striking out 44.4 percent of the total batters he faced (100 of 225). He ranked second in the South Atlantic League in strikeouts per 9.0 innings among relievers (15.88) and second in saves. The Vineland, N.J., native was selected by the Phillies in the 14th round of the June 2017 draft.
García, 17, did not commit an error in his 18 games during August, all of which he played at shortstop. A native of San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic, García committed just one error in his final 37 games of the season, and led all qualifying Gulf Coast League shortstops in fielding percentage (.969, 5 errors in 159 chances). He also turned 11 double plays during his first professional season. García was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2017.
