As part of the club's ongoing effort to reach a younger generation of fans, the Red Sox today launched a new, online program designed to engage elementary and middle school-aged students by using real statistics from Red Sox games to teach math in the classroom.
The new program, "Wally's Math Academy," replaces generic word problems with actual game data. It also includes video recaps of Red Sox games and photos of players. The program is designed to initially engage kids in 2nd through 4th grades and will be expanded and enhanced in the coming years.
Wally's Math Academy was previewed to about 100 Boston Public Schools teachers before last night's Red Sox-Orioles game, and with the help of Wally and Tessie, rolled out to middle school students earlier today at the Trotter Innovation School in Dorchester.
"We've been working on this program for a few years now, and are excited to finally share it with students and teachers," said Red Sox EVP/CMO Adam Grossman. "We hope the daily exposure to Red Sox games and players through math will help build a greater connection to the team at an early age, provide a fun way for kids to hone their math skills, and help us engage and cultivate a community of educators."
Wally's Math Academy is hosted on a platform called Training Camp developed by TruMedia Networks, a sports analytics firm that provides research platforms for teams, leagues, and media partners.
Wally's Math Academy is free to educators. They can sign up by visiting redsox.com/wallysmathacademy
