The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- The club agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornburg on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract for the 2019 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration.
- In addition, the Red Sox will tender 2019 contracts to all 29 remaining unsigned players on their major league roster.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Thornburg, 30, made his Red Sox debut in July 2018 after missing the entire 2017 season due to injury, having undergone surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. The right-hander appeared in 25 games for Boston and posted a 5.63 ERA (15 ER/24.0 IP), including a 1.64 mark (2 ER/11.0 IP) during a 12-game stretch from July 22-August 20. Selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 June Draft, Thornburg went 14-9 with a 2.87 ERA (70 ER/219.2 IP) and a .213 opponent batting average (170-for-799) in 144 career appearances (10 starts) for the franchise from 2012-16 prior to being acquired by the Red Sox via trade in December 2016.
Boston's 40-man roster is at 39. Ten players are already under contract for 2019: J.D. Martinez, Mitch Moreland, Eduardo Núñez, Steve Pearce, Dustin Pedroia, Rick Porcello, David Price, Chris Sale, Thornburg, and Christian Vázquez.
