HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have signed free agent catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year deal for the 2019 season. The announcement was made by Astros President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Chirinos, 34, spent his 2018 season with the Rangers, posting career highs in home runs (18), RBI (65) and games played (113). His .757 OPS (.338 OBP/.419 SLG) ranked second among AL catchers and sixth in the Majors (min. 400 PA). Chirinos' combined .808 OPS over the past two seasons ranks second among AL catchers and fifth among Major League catchers in that span. He is just one season removed from a breakout 2017 campaign, in which he posted an .866 OPS (.360 OBP/.506 SLG) in 88 games for the Astros intra-state rivals. Chirinos spent a total of six seasons with the Rangers (2013-18) and has appeared in parts of seven Major League seasons, including a 20-game stint with the Rays in 2011.
With the addition of Chirinos, the Astros 40-man roster now stands at 38 players.
