The Boston Red Sox today announced that Billy McMillon has been named manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox, the organization's Triple-A affiliate.
Red Sox Vice President of Player Development Ben Crockett made the announcement.
McMillon, 47, has spent the past 11 seasons in the Red Sox organization (2008-18), most recently serving as Minor League Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator from 2016-18. He managed for six seasons prior to that role, including for Double-A Portland from 2014-15. In his debut with the Sea Dogs, he led the club to a franchise-record 88 wins and was tabbed Eastern League Manager of the Year.
Prior to his time in Portland, McMillon managed High-A Salem from 2012-13, leading the club to a Mills Cup Championship Series title in 2013. In his first of two seasons at the helm of Single-A Greenville, he led the Drive to the 2010 South Atlantic League championship finals in what was his managerial debut. He also worked with Greenville from 2008-09, serving as the club's hitting coach. McMillon has managed several current Red Sox Major Leaguers, including Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Jackie Bradley Jr.
McMillon's 12-year playing career included parts of six seasons in the Major Leagues. He was selected in the eighth round of the 1993 June Draft by the Florida Marlins, whose General Manager at the time was current Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. McMillon played in 262 Major League games with the Marlins (1996-97), Philadelphia Phillies (1997), Detroit Tigers (2001), and Oakland A's (2001, '03-04). His lone postseason experience came in 2003, when he appeared in three American League Division Series games against the Red Sox.
McMillon attended Clemson University from 1991-93, finishing his collegiate career with a .381 lifetime batting average. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Clemson and a General MBA from the University of Phoenix. McMillon and his wife, Krista, reside in Columbia, SC, and have two teenage children, Kennedy and Jackson.
