Fenway Park Essay and Art contests launched today

Contest Inspired by Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston; Kids up to 16 Years old Throughout New England Eligible to Participate

The Fenway Park Essay and Art contests were launched today for children and young adults throughout New England up to 16 years old.  The contests, which were inspired by Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston and are part of the ballpark's 100th Anniversary celebrations in 2012, will last until June 2, 2012.

To participate in the contests, children throughout the New England region are encouraged to submit an essay up to 500-600 words on what Fenway Park means to them.  They may also create a piece of artwork that captures their vision and artistic view of Fenway Park.  Inspiration can be drawn from personal experiences, anecdotes, features of the 100-year-old ballpark, its place in the annals of American sports or any other aspect of Fenway Park that they might find interesting.  Additionally, everyone is encouraged to also visit the website www.fenwaypark100.com, which has a comprehensive collection of information, facts, details and statistics about America's Most Beloved Ballpark.

"Fenway Park is a truly special place," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. "I have so many fond Red Sox memories over the years, and I can't wait to see the stories and memories shared by our young people. Whether it's your first trip to the park with your parents or watching a major playoff victory, Fenway Park transcends generations here in the city of Boston."

"In addition to written submissions, we are also eager to see the creativity and artistic ability of the children of Red Sox Nation," said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino. "We hope to receive numerous art works that showcase the breadth of their imagination regarding Fenway Park."

There will be one winner for best essay and one winner for best artwork from the Boston Public School system.  There will also be one essay and one artwork winner from each of the six New England states.  Winners will be recognized at a pre-game ceremony, have a chance to meet a Red Sox player and Red Sox Legends, and have an opportunity to enjoy a game at Fenway Park with a family member or friend.  Their submissions will also be on display at Fenway Park in the 2012 season.

Essays and artworks should be submitted to: Fenway Park Essay and Art Contest, Boston Red Sox, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215.
