The San Francisco Giants announced today that they have acquired infielder/outfielder Breyvic Valera from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
Valera appeared in 32 big league games last season between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles, batting .234 with eight RBI. The switch-hitter was traded from the Dodgers to the Orioles along with four other prospects in exchange for IF Manny Machado on July 18. Valera hit safely in eight of his 12 games with the Orioles, batting .286 (10-for-35).
The utility player appeared in games at second base, third base, shortstop, left field, and center field over 94 contests between triple-A Oklahoma City and triple-A Norfolk last season, batting .261 with nine home runs and 39 RBI. He's posted a .357 OBP over his minor league career and drawn 297 walks compared to 270 strikeouts in 894 games.
Valera, who turns 27-years-old on January 8, was named a MILB.com Organization All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals Organization in 2014 and 2017. He was also named the Venezuelan Winter League Most Valuable Player in 2017 while playing with the Bravos de Margarita.
With today's addition, the Giants 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
