The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed free agent right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller to a one-year contract for the 2019 season. Financial terms were not disclosed, per club policy.
 
Miller, 28, is expected to be fully healthy for the start of spring training after he was limited to 9 games/8 starts in the majors over the past two seasons. He spent two stints on the 60-day disabled list in his final season with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018, one as he returned from right elbow surgery and another for right elbow inflammation. Miller had 'Tommy John' ligament replacement surgery on May 10, 2017, and he allowed 21 runs (19 earned) in 16.0 innings spanning 5 games/4 starts in the majors last season. He was not tendered a 2019 contract offer by the Diamondbacks on November 30, making him a free agent.
 
In his last full big league season with Atlanta in 2015, Miller was selected to the National League All-Star team while setting career highs with 33 starts, 205.1 innings, and 171 strikeouts. He was a first round (19th overall) pick in the 2009 June draft and won 15 games for the Cardinals as a 22-year-old in 2013, part of a span in which he pitched for St. Louis in the postseason for three straight years from 2012-14.  
Miller owns a career 37-53 record with a 3.83 ERA over 131 games/124 starts with St. Louis (2012-14), Atlanta (2015), and Arizona (2016-18). He has held right-handed batters to a slash line of .231/.296/.354/.650 in the majors. The Brownwood, Texas native has never pitched in Arlington in his big league career, as his only outing in the state came in his first season on September 26, 2012 at Houston.
 
With the addition of Miller, the Rangers now have 38 players on the club's major league roster.
