Nationals agree to terms with Brian Dozier

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with second baseman Brian Dozier and designated infielder Matt Reynolds for assignment on Sunday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

Dozier, 31, joins the Nationals after ranking among Major League second baseman in walks (3rd, 70), home runs (T6th, 21), RBI (T6th, 72), extra-base hits (7th, 53), runs scored (8th, 81) and doubles (T9th, 30) in 2018. He began his seventh Major League season with the Minnesota Twins before being acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the non-waiver trade deadline. In 151 games between the two clubs, Dozier hit .215 with 30 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 72 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 81 runs scored. He posted a .305 on-base percentage and a .391 slugging percentage. 

An American League All-Star in 2015 and a Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner in 2017, Dozier has clubbed 172 home runs since his Major League debut in 2012, the most among Major League second basemen during that stretch. His 404 career extra-base hits are tied for second among second basemen behind only Robinson Cano (421) since 2012. Dozier has clubbed 28 career leadoff home runs, fourth-most among active Major League players. 

From 2013-17, Dozier ranked ninth in the American League -- and third among Major League second basemen -- in Wins Above Replacement (21.7) according to FanGraphs.com. 

In 2016, Dozier clubbed 42 home runs for the Minnesota Twins, tied for the second most by a second baseman in Major League history with Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby (42 in 1922) and behind only Davey Johnson (43 in 1973). 

From 2014-17, Dozier became the only player in Minnesota Twins history to score at least 100 runs in four consecutive seasons.

Dozier appeared in 12 Postseason games in 2017 and 2018, including experience in 11 games as the Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the 2018 World Series. 

A veteran of seven Major League seasons, Dozier has hit .246 with 211 doubles, 21 triples, 172 home runs, 511 RBI, 426 walks and 609 runs scored with the Minnesota Twins (20012-18) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2018). A native of Fulton, Miss., Dozier was selected by Minnesota in the eighth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern Mississippi. 

Reynolds, 28, appeared in 12 games for the Nationals in 2018. He hit .154 with one RBI, one walk and one run scored.
