Padres place RHP Joe Wieland on 15-day DL; recall INF/OF James Darnell from Triple-A Tucson

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 7) with a strained right elbow and recalled infielder/outfielder James Darnell from Triple-A Tucson.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Darnell, 25, made his Big League debut with the Padres last year, hitting .222 (10-for-45) with two doubles, one home run, seven RBI and two runs scored in 18 games. In 31 games with Triple-A Tucson this year, he has split his time between third base and left field, hitting .267 (31-for-116) with six doubles, seven home runs, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored.  Over parts of five minor league seasons in the Padres organization, he has hit .299 (437-for-1460) with 101 doubles, seven triples, 63 home runs, 254 RBI and 244 runs scored in 392 games.

Wieland, 22, made his Big League debut this year and has gone 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA (14 ER/27.2 IP) in five starts with the Padres. Over parts of five minor league seasons with the Texas Rangers (2008-11) and Padres organizations (2011-12), he has gone 33-19 with a 3.29 ERA (160 ER/438.0 IP) in 86 career outings (77 starts).
