A's place McCarthy on 15-day Disabled List; recall Miller from Sacramento

The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 18 with a strained right shoulder, the club announced today.  To take his spot on the roster, the A’s have recalled right-handed pitcher Jim Miller from Triple-A Sacramento.

McCarthy was 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts with the A’s, including 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA over his last four starts.  He allowed a .271 opponents batting average, including .219 against right-handed hitters and .175 with runners in scoring position.  This is his seventh career stint on the disabled list, his second in two seasons with the A’s.

Miller joins the A’s for the second time this year.  He began the season at Sacramento and was 0-1 with two saves and a 3.00 ERA in eight relief appearances before he was selected by Oakland April 25.  The 30-year-old right-handed logged a 1.93 ERA in six relief appearances with A’s and held the opposition to a .229 batting average before he was optioned to Sacramento May 11.  He appeared in two games with the River Cats following his option, allowing a run in 3.1 innings, and is 0-2 with two saves and a 2.92 ERA in 10 relief appearances overall.  Miller allowed a .200 batting average, including .071 against right-handed hitters, and walked just two batters in 12.1 innings.
