Royals select contract of left-handed pitcher Will Smith from Omaha

Chris Getz Placed on 15-day Disabled List

The Kansas City Royals today announced that the club has selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Will Smith from Omaha (AAA) and placed second baseman Chris Getz on the 15-day Disabled List with a left ribcage contusion.  Smith is expected to join the Royals tonight in New York and wear #53.  To clear space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Blake Wood was transferred to the 60-day Disabled List.

The 22-year-old Smith was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts for the Storm Chasers.  He was 13-9 with a 3.85 ERA in 27 starts for Double-A Northwest Arkansas in 2011 on his way to being named the Naturals Pitcher of the Year.  Born and raised in Newnan, Ga., Smith was acquired by the Royals along with pitcher Sean O’Sullivan from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for infielder Alberto Callaspo on July 22, 2010.  He was originally a seventh-round pick of the Angels in the 2007 Draft.
