Asche, Biddle win May honors as Phillies Minor League Players of the Month

Third baseman Cody Asche of the Clearwater Threshers is the Phillies Minor League Player of the Month. Pitching honors go to his teammate, left-hander Jesse Biddle.

Asche, a fourth-round selection in the 2011 draft out of the University of Nebraska, batted .363 in May, amassing 41 hits in 27 games.

A native of St. Charles, MO., Asche ranked in the top 10 of five offensive categories in the Florida State League for the month of May: hits, batting average, extra-base hits, doubles and total bases. The 21-year-old has spent much of the season in the middle of Clearwater’s lineup batting third, fifth and sixth, while leading the Threshers to a 29-24 record on the year.

Biddle, a Philadelphia native, went 2-0 with a 1.36 ERA in six starts during the month. Selected 27th overall by the Phillies in the first round of the June 2010 draft out of Germantown Friends School (PA), the 20-year-old struck out 32 batters in 33.0 innings while holding opposing batters to a .185 average.

After beginning the year 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA in his first three starts, Biddle has rebounded, going 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA over his last eight starts (6 ER, 46.0 IP) to improve his overall record to 3-2 with a 2.51 ERA.

Ranked by Baseball America as the second-best prospect in the Phillies organization for 2012, the lefty currently ranks second in the Florida State League with 10.05 strikeouts per nine innings.
