D-backs select 14 players in second day of 2012 draft
(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they selected 14 additional players in rounds 2-15 of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft today, according to D-backs’ Director, Scouting Ray Montgomery. Of the D-backs’ first 15 picks over the first two days, they have selected three catchers, three infielders, four outfielders and five right-handed pitchers. Yesterday, the D-backs selected Acadiana High School (Lafayette, La.) catcher Stryker Trahan with their first-round pick (26th overall).
“We placed an emphasis on drafting quality position players early in this year’s draft and we accomplished just that over the first two days while also adding some great arms,” said Montgomery. “I’m very proud of the job our scouts did in finding a great mix of prospects who are well-rounded and prepared to compete professionally for the D-backs.”
Today’s selections of note include:
• Infielder Jose Munoz (second round, 90th overall) hit .419 with 9 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs and 27 RBI for Los Altos High School. The San Diego State commit led his team to the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals.
• Right-handed pitcher Jake Barrett (third round, 120th overall) collected 11 saves with 36 strikeouts in 33.0 innings this season for Arizona State University. Barrett was rated the 55th best overall prospect by MLB.com.
• Catcher Ronnie Freeman (sixth round, 183rd overall) was ranked by Baseball America as the 10th-best catching prospect.
• Outfielder Daniel Poma (10th round, 333rd overall) was one of 30 semifinalists for the 2012 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award and became the first Hofstra player to win the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors.
• Outfielder Alex Glenn (12th round, 393rd overall) played at Arizona Christian University.
• Catcher Phildrick Llewellyn (13th round, 423rd overall) was a 2012 Rawlings Third-Team All-American at Trinity Christian Academy.
