Rockies conclude the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies concluded the 2012 Major League Baseball today by making 25 selections in rounds 16-40. The Rockies selected 19 pitchers (17 right, 2 left), 5 catchers, 13 infielders and 5 outfielders in this year’s draft. 

With their first selection, 10^th overall, the Rockies selected outfielder David Dahl out of Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, AL. Dahl was rated the 12^th overall player available for the draft by Baseball America.

Dahl, 18, is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound outfielder who throws right and bats left. In his senior season for Oak Mountain he batted .412 (35-for-84) with 11 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs, 17 RBI and 18 stolen bases. In addition to being rated the 12^th-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America he was also rated the top prospect from the state of Alabama by the same publication. Dahl was rated the third-best outfield prospect in the draft and fifth-best position player by Baseball America as well.

Dahl is the second outfielder the Rockies have taken with their first overall selection in the last three years. Colorado selected Kyle Parker in the first round in 2010. Dahl is the first high school outfielder the Rockies have ever selected with their first overall selection of the First-Year Player Draft.

With the 46^th overall pick of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler out of Radford University (Va.). Butler was rated as the top overall player in the draft from the state of Virginia by Baseball America.

Butler, 21, is a 6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Butler went 7-4 with a 2.20 ERA (98.0 ip, 24 er), 23 walks and 95 strikeouts in 14 starts for Radford in 2012. Butler was rated as the 85^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America. He was the Big South Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Butler is the highest drafted player from Radford University in the school’s history.

Max White, OF: Rockies second round selection / 73rd overall out of Williston High School in Florida

White, 18, 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, is an outfielder from Williston High School in Williston, FL. In his senior season at Williston, White hit .416 with 3 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs, 23 RBI and 34 stolen bases. White was rated the 111^th-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America and the 19^th-best prospect from the state of Florida. The University of Florida signee was also rated the 24^th-best outfielder in the draft by Baseball America.

Tom Murphy, C: Rockies third round selection / 105th overall out of the University of Buffalo (NY)

Murphy, 21, 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, is a catcher from the University of Buffalo. In his junior season at Buffalo, Murphy hit .311 (68-for-219) with 20 doubles, 4 triples, 13 home runs and 51 RBI in 56 games for the Bulls. The catcher had a .616 slugging percentage and a .396 on-base percentage in 2012. The 13 home runs set the University of Buffalo single-season home run record. Murphy was rated the 65^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the top player from the state of New York. He was also rated the fifth-best catcher in the draft by Baseball America. Murphy was a first team All-MAC selection in 2012.

Ryan Warner, RHP: Rockies third round supplemental selection / 128th overall out of Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO

Warner, 18, 6-foot-7 and 185 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO. Warner is the first high school player from the state of Colorado selected in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The right-handed pitcher was an All-Colorado Player as well as the Gatorade State Player of the Year during his 2012 season at Pine Creek. Warner went 7-1 with a 2.18 ERA (51.1 ip, 19 er), with just 16 walks and 89 strikeouts for the state-semifinalist Pine Creek baseball team.

Seth Willoughby, RHP: Rockies fourth round selection / 138th overall out of Xavier University (OH)

Willoughby, 21, 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. Willoughby was originally a two-way player for Xavier before being moved strictly to relief. In his Junior season at Xavier, Willoughby went 2-1 with 12 saves, a 1.01 ERA (35.2 ip, 4 er), 12 walks and 44 strikeouts in 25 games, all in relief, for the Musketeers. Willoughby was rated the 115^th-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 2^nd-best player overall from the state of Ohio by the same publication. Willoughby was named to the second-team All-Atlantic 10 team as well as academic All-Conference honors in his Junior season in 2012.

Matthew Wessinger, INF: Rockies fifth round selection / 168th overall out of St. Johns University (NY)

Wessinger, 21, 5-foor-11 and 180 pounds, is a middle infielder from St. Johns University in New York. In his senior season at St. Johns, Wessinger has batted .353 (84-for-238) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 47 RBI in 61 games for the Super-Regional Bound Red Storm. Wessinger has also stolen 34 bases in 36 attempts and drawn 34 walks. His .353 batting average and .442 on-base percentage both led St. Johns in 2012. Wessinger was named to the Big-East All-Conference second team in 2012.

Matthew Carasiti, RHP: Rockies sixth round selection / 198th overall out of St. Johns University (NY)

Carasiti, 21, 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from St. Johns University in New York. In his junior season in 2012, Carasiti has gone 7-5 with a 3.98 ERA (83.2 ip, 37 er), 31 walks and 64 strikeouts in 18 games/14 starts. Carasiti was rated the 4^th-best player in draft from the state of New York and the 160^th-best player overall by Baseball America. Carasiti and Wessinger were two of four St John’s players selected in the first six rounds of the MLB draft, the first time that has happened in the school’s history.

Wilfredo Rodriguez, C: Rockies seventh round selection / 228th overall out of Puerto Rico Baseball Academy

Rodriguez, 21, 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, is a catcher from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Baseball America rated Rodriguez the 7^th-best player in the draft from Puerto Rico and the third-best player from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, the same academy that No. 1 overall selection Carlos Correa attended. Rodriguez was rated the 15^th-best catcher in the draft by Baseball America as well.

Derek Jones, OF: Rockies eighth round selection / 258th overall out of Washington State University

Jones, 22, 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, is an outfielder from Washington State University. In his senior season in 2012, Jones batted .335 (70for-209) with 17 doubles, 3 triples, 9 home runs, 45 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 55 games for the Cougars. Jones was named to the 2012 Pac-12 All-Conference team, one of two Cougars named to the team. He was rated the 9^th-best player from the state of Washington by Baseball America, as well as the 274^th-best player overall in the draft.

Zach Jemiola, RHP: Rockies ninth round selection / 288th overall out of Great Oak High School (CA)

Jemiola, 18, 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from Great Oak High School in Temecula, California. Jemiola was rated the 434^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 90^th-best player from the state of California by the same publication.

Ben Waldrip, INF: Rockies 10th round selection / 318th overall out of Jacksonville State University (FL)

Waldrip, 21, 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, is a first baseman from Jacksonville State University in Florida. In his senior season at Jacksonville State, Waldrip hit .330 (74-for-220) with 14 doubles 1 triple, 18 home runs and 61 RBI in 53 games. Waldrip earned All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team honors in each of the last two seasons. Waldrip’s 18 home runs ranked 4^th in Division I baseball in 2012. He was ranked the 368^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America.
