A's select 25 Players on Final Day of 2012 First-Year Player Draft

The Oakland A's selected 25 players on the third and final day of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, which completed rounds 16 through 40 today. Including their picks from the first two days, the A's drafted 30 college players, 12 high school athletes and one player with no school. The total includes 21 pitchers, four catchers, 12 infielders and six outfielders. The deadline for signing drafted players is July 13.

The A's selected two college players from teams that are playing in the NCAA Division I Super Regionals this weekend. North Carolina State outfielder Ryan Mathews was drafted in the 27th round. He is batting .336 with 17 home runs and 62 RBI in 57 games for the Wolfpack, who face Florida in Gainesville beginning Saturday. SUNY-Stony Brook right-handed pitcher Tyler Johnson was the A's 33rd round pick. He is 11-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 14 starts this year and is the school record holder with 35 career victories. The Seawolves face LSU in Baton Rouge beginning Friday.

The A's drafted two high school athletes from Northern California including shortstop Devon Gradford in the 34th round out of Thomas Downey High School in Modesto and first baseman Dalton Blaser in the 39th round from Roseville High School in Roseville.
