D-backs select 25 players on third day of 2012 Draft

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they selected 25 additional players in rounds 16-40 of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft today, according to D-backs' Director, Scouting Ray Montgomery. Of the D-backs' 40 picks over the last three days, they selected 4 catchers, 10 infielders, 8 outfielders, 3 left-handed pitchers and 15 right-handed pitchers. On Monday, the D-backs selected Acadiana High School (Lafayette, La.) catcher Stryker Trahan with their first-round pick (26th overall).

"I am very pleased with the caliber of prospects we drafted to address the needs we identified from the onset," said Montgomery. "I commend our entire scouting department and baseball operations department for doing their due diligence over the last year to identify the young men we drafted the past three days. We hope to get these prospects into the farm system in the near future and continue developing Major League caliber players who can help us to our ultimate goal of winning the World Series."

Today's selections of note include:

Left-handed pitcher Mathew Dermody (23rd round, 723 overall) was University of Iowa baseball's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Right-handed pitcher Chris Capper (26th round, 813 overall) was born in South Africa but moved to Glendale, Ariz. at the age of 8 and eventually attended Deer Valley High School. During his junior year last season, he was the co-captain for Bringham Young University's baseball team.
Right-handed pitcher Chase Stevens (30th round, 933 overall) logged 84 strikeouts in 67.0 innings pitched at Oklahoma State University and was named 2012 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
Outfielder Cam Gibson (38th round, 333rd overall), son of D-backs' manager Kirk Gibson, was a 2012 Louisville Slugger Pre-Season High School All-American and has committed to Michigan State University, his father's alma mater.
Right-handed pitcher Zane Hemond (40th round, 1,233rd overall) is the grandson to D-backs' Special Assistant to the President & CEO Roland Hemond.

This was the D-backs' 17th First-Year Player Draft since being awarded an expansion team from Major League Baseball in 1995.
