Padres select RHP Jason Marquis from Double-A San Antonio; Place LHP Eric Stults on 15-day DL

Club transfers INF Jason Bartlett from 15-day to 60-day DL

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have selected right-hander Jason Marquis from Double-A San Antonio and placed left-hander Eric Stults on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 4, with a strained left latissimus dorsi muscle. In addition, the club has transferred infielder Jason Bartlett from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Marquis, 33, is scheduled to start the Padres 12:35 p.m. PT game against the San Francisco Giants at Petco Park today. He was signed to a minor league contract by the Padres on May 29 this year.  In seven starts for the Minnesota Twins this season, his first campaign in the American League, he went 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA (32 ER/34.0 IP).  The right-hander made one start for Double-A San Antonio on May 31, working 7.0 innings and allowing one run for the Missions. Over parts of 13 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2000-03), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06), Chicago Cubs (2007-08), Colorado Rockies (2009), Washington Nationals (2010-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011) and Minnesota Twins (2012), he has gone 106-102 with a 4.63 ERA (879 ER/1709.2 IP) and 986 strikeouts against 659 walks in 333 games, 274 starts.

Stults, 32, has gone 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA (12 ER/24.1 IP) in four starts for the Padres this year. The southpaw was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on May 17.  In six games, five starts, total this year between the White Sox and Padres, he has gone 1-2 with a 4.06 ERA (14 ER/31.0 IP).  Originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a 15th-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 9-12 with a 4.79 ERA (100 ER/188.0 IP) in 47 games, 29 starts, over parts of six Major League seasons with the Dodgers (2006-09), Colorado Rockies (2011), White Sox (2012) and Padres (2012).

Bartlett, 32, was placed on the disabled list on May 17 with a strained right knee.  In 29 games for the Padres this year, he has hit .133 (11-for-83) with five doubles, four RBI and eight runs scored. Over parts of nine Major League seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2004-07), Tampa Bay Rays (2008-10) and Padres (2011-12), Bartlett has hit .271 (849-for-3,138) with 156 doubles, 26 triples, 31 home runs, 286 RBI and 432 runs scored in 889 career games.
