A’s Claim RHP Farquhar off Waivers from Toronto; Option him to Sacramento

The Oakland A’s claimed right-handed pitcher Danny Farquhar off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today.  To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred right-handed pitcher Andrew Carignan to the 60-day disabled list.

Farquhar has spent the entire season at Double-A New Hampshire and is 0-1 with a save and a 2.97 ERA in 20 relief appearances.  He has allowed a .237 opponents batting average and has struck out 33 in 30.1 innings.  The 25-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays June 2.  Farquhar began his career with Toronto but was traded to the A’s with right-handed pitcher Trystan Magnuson for Rajai Davis November 17, 2010.  He was traded back to Toronto for left-handed pitcher David Purcey on April 18, 2011 after appearing in four games for Sacramento.

Carignan was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He was recalled from Sacramento May 27 for his third stint with the A’s this year and did not allow a run in four appearances and 3.1 innings.  Carignan has a 4.66 ERA and .242 opponents batting average in 11 appearances with Oakland overall.
