Padres Select RHP Brad Boxberger From Tucson; Option RHP Andrew Cashner to San Antonio

The San Diego Padres today announced they have selected right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson and have optioned right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner to Double-A San Antonio. In addition, the club has transferred right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer to the 60-day disabled list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Boxberger, 24, has made 22 relief appearances for the Tucson Padres this year, going 1-2 with five saves and a 4.70 ERA (12 ER/23.0 IP). He was acquired by San Diego as part of the five-player trade with the Reds that also sent Edinson Volquez, Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal to the Padres in exchange for Mat Latos. Over parts of three minor league seasons between the Reds (2010-11) and Padres (2012) organizations, Boxberger has gone 8-16 with 16 saves and a 3.87 ERA (76 ER/176.2 IP) in 113 games (13 starts).

Cashner, 25, joins San Antonio after making his first start with the Padres yesterday in Milwaukee. He worked 2.1 innings of one-run ball in that start after having made 27 relief appearances to begin his Padres career. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Chicago Cubs (2010-11) and Padres (2012), he has gone 5-9 with a 4.15 ERA (43 ER/93.1 IP) in 88 games (two starts).

Stauffer, 30, was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 18 (retroactive to May 15) with a strained right elbow.
