Bob Stinson, original Mariners catcher, throw's out Sunday's ceremonial first pitch

Former Mariners catcher welcomed back to Seattle as part of season-long Mariners 35th Anniversary celebration

Bob Stinson, one of the original members of the Seattle Mariners, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Mariners vs. San Francisco Giants game on Sunday, June 17. Stinson was invited back to Seattle as part of the Mariners 35th Anniversary celebration, a season-long tribute to the franchise’s history in which former Mariners are welcomed back to Seattle for special appearances and promotions at Safeco Field.

Stinson, who was known as “Scrap Iron” during his playing days, was selected by the Mariners from the Kansas City Royals in the expansion draft. Although he had been in a backup role most of his career, Stinson became the Mariners original everyday catcher in 1977, the team’s inaugural season. He had his finest season in 1978, establishing career highs in games played, at-bats, hits, doubles, home runs and RBI.

During his 12-year Major League career, Stinson played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1969-1970), the St. Louis Cardinals (1971), the Houston Astros (1972), Montreal Expos (1973-1974), Kansas City Royals (1975-1976) and the Mariners from 1977-1980.

These days, Stinson lives in the Orlando area where he is a baseball and golf instructor.

Tickets for Sunday’s game, and all other games on the Mariners 2012 home schedule, are available at www.mariners.com/tickets. They can also be purchased with no service charge at Seattle Mariners Team Stores (Bellevue Square, Southcenter Mall, Alderwood Mall, and at 4th and Stewart in downtown Seattle) and the Safeco Field box office.
